1. Sony RX 100 VII

Although I prefer the controls on a Nikon D800 series camera, it is not convenient to haul that plus several f/2.8 zoom lenses everywhere I go. The RX 100 VII packs up in a very small size, and covers a very useful 24-200mm equivalent zoom range.

Pros

Convenient size.

Pop-up viewfinder.

24-200mm equivalent lens.

Cons

Minimal manual controls.

With its small size and metal surface, it is difficult to hold on to. However, it would be possible to get an aftermarket grip.

Notes

Price: £1,049.00 (including VAT)

Released: 2019

Alternatives

Shooting indoors and want a wider aperture lens at the cost of a more constrained zoom range: Sony RX 100 VA.

Want a proper camera, with more controls and better image quality: Nikon Z50, Z30 or Z fc.

2. Canon EOS R3

Pros

Canon is the most popular dedicated camera brand in the world.

Fully professional camera for still photography.

Integrated vertical battery grip.

The Canon 70-200mm f2.8 lens is much shorter when not in use than rival brands.

Cons

Very expensive.

The R5 was roasted at launch for quickly overheating when shooting video at the highest quality levels. While it has not been widely reported what the R3 is like in this regard, there are other cameras that are more proven for longer running video use.

Nikon and Sony are notable at the moment for producing the very highest quality lenses.

Notes

Canon EOS R3: £5,879.00 (including VAT)

Canon RF 70-200mm F2.8L IS USM: from £2,729.00 to £3,059.00 (including VAT)

Released: 2021

Alternatives

Don't want the added size and weight of the integrated vertical battery grip: Canon EOS R5

Want higher resolution for stock photography or large prints: Canon EOS R5

Want a hybrid camera for stills and video: Nikon Z9, Nikon Z8, Panasonic Lumix S5 IIX, Fujifilm X-H2S.

Want a camera for video use: Canon EOS R5 C, Canon EOS C70, Sony FX3, Sony FX6.

3. Nikon Z9

Pros

Stacked sensor for speedy operation and smooth video.

Shutterless design for improved reliability and better video.

High quality lenses.

Cons

Expensive.

Notes

Price: from £5,199.00 to £5,299.00 (including VAT)

Released: 2021

Alternatives

Don't want the added size and weight of the integrated vertical battery grip: Nikon Z8.

Want a cheaper hybrid camera for stills and video: Panasonic Lumix S5 IIX, Fujifilm X-H2S.
