Magnus Carlsen Not Playing in the 2023 FIDE World Championship Match

21 July 2022 updated 21 July 2022

Current FIDE World Champion Magnus Carlsen has confirmed, after careful consideration, that he will not be defending his title.

Instead, the first and second place finishers in the FIDE Candidates Tournament, Ian Nepomniachtchi and Ding Liren respectively, will compete against each other in the 2023 FIDE World Championship.

FIDE is the French acronym for the International Chess Federation, or World Chess Federation, a Swiss based international organization, connecting and acting as a governing body for national chess federations.
